2000    Walleye Wagatta Race Results

Race Summary:        The 2000 Walleye Wagatta was held on, June 10th & 11th at Wind Power Windsurfing Center, on WINDY Lake Winnebago, was blessed with wind. Saturday, 33 competitors had all the wind they needed with gust recorded up to 35 mph! The One-Design class was flying the largest sails, probably not by choice. The open class were using sails smaller than 7.5.

Three Wind Power M course races (famous 5 jibes) were held taking about an hour between starts. Voita Cervenka, from the Minneapolis area, dominated on his Olympic One-Design board and 7.4 sail. Andy Gratton and Adam Anderson followed up in the One-design class. John Moehn leading the open class followed by Steve VandeCorput and Niles Book. Richard Harmon, Bob Perzynski and Roman Siczek respectively leading the 7.5 production class. The Sport fleet had some close races with 3rd Overall, Kathy Tatro leading the women’s class. Colin Knight from Chicago, 1st overall, lead the men’s class followed by Joe Cayen and Gene Likhterev. The Master’s class had Dieter Reichelt, 2nd overall, lead followed by Steve Willits and Rodney Scholz, respectively.

As the winds increased even more a long distance race was setup. With all 33 competitors starting at the same time they were off on a 5-mile reach to the west shore. Most wondering how badly they were going to get spanked. The Sport Fleet had half the distance to travel. Kevin Gratton and Mark Grienert on short boards pasted Voita on the out-going leg, to round the buoy on the far shore but the winds dropped off. Voita along with Mr. Harman, Dennis Galatowitsch on long boards past them on the way back. Colin Knight lead the Sport Fleet followed by Steve Willits, Gene Likhterev, and Kathy Tatro.

A tired and sore but content group of racers retired to the Saturday night cookout and bonfire at Wind Power. The tales were getting pretty windy as the beer flowed and the fire burned late into the night.

Sunday was a new day with lighter winds that everyone could enjoy. Three course races were held in 12-15 mph winds. Followed by two rounds of figure eight slalom races. Somehow Roman Kaplan sail in both the Sport Fleet and A-Fleet races. He must have had excessive energy. For more details, see enclosed copy for the race results.

A mast-throwing contest preceded the awards ceremony and prize drawing. Wayne Owens donated Miller SurfBoard Tapper Handles for the top 4 finishers with the longest throws.

Don’t wait; start training today for the Wind Power Championships Sept. 23rd and 24th. Also on Friday the 22nd wind permitting the Lake Winnebago Iron Man race will be held. This entails sailing the length of the lake and back trying to break the record held by Andy Gratton 1hr 16 min (High Cliff State park to Fond du Lac).

Finally, I would like to thank all those who attended. And most of all thank those who helped make this event happen. Family: Mom, Dave Gratton, Ann and Andy Gratton. Friends: Kathy Tatro, Mike Bierworth, Jo Bednarik and everyone else that helped in anyway.

Congratulations to Dennis and Christen Galatowitsch, very proud parents of their 1st son. It took them forever, that’s why we have not seen them for the last few years. Glad to see them back!

Thank You!
Kevin Gratton USA 8
