1999    Championships Race Results

Race Summary:
Once again the 1999 Wind Power Championships turned out to be a great weekend of racing and other fun (Bite the Bag).  The long distance that was to be held on Friday was cancelled due to lack of wind.  However, the Friday nite sacrifice (board supplied by Craig Newhouse) to the wind Gods brought some good wind for Saturday and Sunday.  On Saturday, the wind started out light from the Southwest, but as the day progressed the wind came up with gusts up to 20 mph.  Three races were held before lunch, followed by a moderate long distance.  Kevin held his usual Sat. Nite party and large bonfire.  The Bite the Bag game was enjoyed by all, with Andy taking home the quarter (1st place) with Kathy taking home 2nd place. Sunday, the wind again was from the SW.  Four races were held as the wind varied from about 13 to 22 mph.  It was definitely a weekend to have full adjustables (outhaul/downhaul) on your sail.  The committee boat had problems after the final race on Sunday and could not get started.  Many thanks to Andy Gratton, who towed via his One Design a charged battery and other tools to the committee boat in a cooler tied to a tandem board.  Due to this unexpected situation, the awards ceremony was held late and the personalized trophies were not totally completed.  Wind Power apologizes for this and will strive to do it better next year.  There also was a small error in the overall point scoring.  The long distance held on Sat. was to be counted double points, but it was only counted once.  The Class Places did NOT change, there were only 3 overall fleet changes in A and Sport Fleet.  Wind Power will be mailing the updated score sheet (or you may download it here) with your personalized trophy for the top 3 racers in each class.  We would like to thank all the racers and spectators for attending the 1999 Wind Power Championships.  Last, but not least, we extend our gracious thanks to all the Volunteers (Dave, Joan and Andy Gratton; Kathy Tatro; Craig Newhouse; Mike Bierworth and more) who helped in organizing and supporting this successful event.

The Winner of the MOWIND Raffle was: Marla Martin from Chicago, IL.  Marla is the proud owner of a new Gaastra 6.0 1X sail.  Marla is just getting into windsurfing and now has added a very nice sail to her quiver.  Starting to windsurf can be a bit expensive at first, since it is a very equipment intensive sport, but with a small donation to MOWIND, she won a sail that she needed and deserves.  It really is a perfect sail for her, good size and handling in all conditions.  Say hi to Marla when you see her styling across the water on her new 6.0 Gaastra 1X sail from MOWIND.  MOWIND greatly appreciates everyone's generous support in purchasing tickets for this raffle.  Thanks!!
